Wow! What Great Kids we have in Plant City, Florida! The Plant City Chapter of Habitat for Humanity would like to recognize some really special and community oriented Kids. These Kids have either come up with ideas to help raise money for our cause, or helped in some special way. Please join us in recognizing these future community oriented adults! Thank You!

We welcome children (and adults) to come up with ideas to help raise funds and community awareness. Church Groups, Schools, Civic Organizations, and Individuals are encouraged to have events and projects to benefit their local community.

Some say community service is a punishment, requirement, or an obligation. I say community service is an opportunity to make a difference in the community or someone’s life. I believe, as the youth of America, we are the future of our country and we need to be involved with our communities in order to make our dream of tomorrow come true.

With this in mind, the organizations I am primarily involved with are Habitat for Humanity, Shriner’s National Junior Disability Championship, and Relay for Life.

But Habitat for Humanity is my passion. It is a “hands up” that enables families to achieve their dream of home ownership. I have painted, caulked, hammered, carried lumber, cleaned yards, sanded, marked studs, and just about anything else you can think of. I was honored to have the opportunity to co-MC at a recent Habitat for Humanity “Little House Carnival” and also co-sponsored a game booth. In addition, I recruited volunteers to staff the booth.

It takes $80,000 to $90,000 to build a home and it is my goal to help raise enough money to build a home. I would like to name the house “Opportunity House.” I started out with a couple of Habitat piggy banks placed at local businesses and have raised over $150 in spare change from customers. Thus, my vision for a community “Little House Bank” project began. The idea for a community “Little House Bank” project was presented to the Habitat fundraising committee and is currently underway. I believe this project has the potential, with community involvement, to be the largest fundraiser for the Plant City Chapter to date. If this project is as successful as we anticipate, this idea can be shared with other Chapters throughout the state.

Community service, no matter how large or small the project, makes the community a better place. It can be as simple as mowing an elderly neighbors yard or walking their dog. I believe America’s youth should look for a project they are interested in, and then just have fun with it. The life you will make the greatest impact on is your’s.

 The God Squad
"Local Kids do good work"

The children of First United Methodist Church in Plant City, known as "The God Squad" held a bake sale at the church to raise money for Habitat for Humanity of Plant City. They knew they could not build but wanted to do something to help.

They all got together and made baked goods (with their parents help) and sold their yummy treats after church services. They raised $139.00 and proudly presented the check to Don Rainard, Chairman of The Plant City Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. They were all smiles when Don presented The God Squad with a certificate for excellent service.

4H 4 Humanity

"Charity The Pig"

Hi, my name is Christian Thompson. I am 14 years old, in the 9th grade, in the Christian Home Educator’s of Plant City going on 6 years. Some of my studies include: health and nutrition, the middle ages and forensic science. For the past 5 years I have worked hard in the Chung Do Kwan Association of Tae Kwon Do achieving black belt status. This is my 3rd year in the Barnyard Blessings 4H Club where I have been involved with Operation Military Kids, the State Fair Hay Bale Contest, and won 1st place in the 4H photography contest 2 years in a row. I am hoping that these skills and experiences will help me to be more responsible and prepare me for leadership in the Marines, college, and life in general.

I am raising and showing our 4H club pig that will be sold to the highest bidder at the Hillsborough County Fair. The money raised will be divided among two charities: Stepping Stone Girls Home and Habitat for Humanity. This is my first experience raising a pig and I’m working hard to learn more about how to show and care for a pig, maintain a record book, locate buyers, and contribute to the community.

I would like to invite you to come to the Hillsborough County Fair and bid on our club pig “Charity”. The location is at the new County Fair site at State Road 60 and Sydney Washer Road in Valrico, on November 4th at 2:00pm . We need at least two buyers. Please contact our 4H club leader Debra Dickerson if you are interested at 813-982-2319.
